Austen Itch

~ for the itch only Jane can soothe ~

Hello everyone! I apologize in advance for steering away from our lovable Austen gentlemen, however I was curious on who your favorite Austen ladies are and if there are any specific reasons why you like them.

lol to this because when i took one of those austen character quizzes...i literally chose the answers for anne, so that i could 'have' wentworth! hahahaha i'm terrible! but i don't know that i can stand what her family does to her and what she puts up with. --though i guess it was worth it where FW was involved.

i must say, i don't believe i've thought of a favorite lady. i do like jane and elinor.
jane because she's sweet and elinor because you can confide in here and also because she seems to care for and protect everyone.

I think I tend to like the quiet, perservering type. Anne Elliot certainly, but Elinor Dashwood is right up there as well. Sophia Croft is also interesting as she's travelled with Admiral Croft all over the world. I'm sure she's got some real stories to tell.

I love Elizabeth Bennett because she is a go getter and stands up for herself and her family. She is very confident and says what she feels.

I also love Fanny Price for the opposite reasons I love Elizabeth. I can relate more to Fanny Price than to any other Austen Character. She is quiet and shy and somewhat sheltered in how the world really is. She is also in love with someone who is in love with someone else and she is forced to see him with this other woman every day. I find myself rooting for her every time I read this book!

I'll admit upfront that my knowledge of Fanny is from watching the 80s adaptation--quite faithful I'm told--and so I'm no authority. But, I do admire a woman who stands tall in the face of such adversity. Her position in the household is tenuous at best, and no one respects her, and then there is Mr Obtuseness himself, Edmund. You see the same torturous setting in Persuasion. Anne Elliot having to watch Frederick skylarking with the Musgrove girls while she plays the piano, tends the children, or dance attendance on Mary's complaints.

Austen had a thing about putting the emotional screws to her heroines.

Take care--Susan Kaye
